Overview

This course is designed for aspiring and current flight attendants who wish to develop or refresh their English communication skills for the aviation industry. Participants should have a minimum English proficiency of CEFR B1 or above.

Mode of Delivery

The course is delivered online, with a minimum of eight students per class.

Course Aims

✓ Develop an active knowledge of the key vocabulary and fixed expressions relevant to the role of a flight attendant.

✓ Confidently understand the standard language and terminology encountered by flight attendants in everyday situations, both face to face and via radio communication.

✓ Understand less common language used in both face to face and radio communications without misunderstanding essential information.

✓ Communicate confidently and clearly in routine cabin crew situations, both face to face and via radio communication.

✓ Communicate effectively in less common or unexpected situations, both face to face and via radio communication, while avoiding confusion or misunderstanding.

✓ Produce clear and intelligible standard pronunciation.

✓ Write short, clear texts using accurate grammar and spelling.

Course details

Distinguishing Similar Vowel and Consonant Sounds

Students will learn to distinguish and accurately produce similar vowel and consonant sounds, ensuring clear pronunciation and minimising the risk of misunderstanding.

Word Endings

Students will learn to pronounce final ‘s’ endings clearly and consistently use the correct pronunciation of verbs and adjectives ending in ‘ed’.

Speech Units

Students will learn to divide spoken language into natural sounding speech units, helping listeners follow and understand spoken communication more easily.

Adding Emphasis

Students will learn how to emphasise key words and phrases to communicate clearly and convey meaning more effectively.

Intonation

Students will develop effective use of intonation to support clear, natural and confident communication.

Additional pronunciation features identified by the course tutor during speaking activities will be addressed as they arise throughout the course.

Students will produce short written texts to reinforce vocabulary through end of lesson and end of week assessments.

• Understanding natural spoken English, including fast paced and connected speech

• Handling passenger complaints professionally

• Reassuring passengers in a calm and professional manner

• Asking for clarification when necessary
